Composer & Sound Designer
Thomas Balshaw is an award-winning composer and sound designer working across film, documentary, animation, and interactive media. Classically trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, his music blends romantic orchestration with a genuine love for electro-acoustic composition and contemporary audio design - equally at home in sweeping cinematic landscapes as it is in quieter, more textured work.
His music has earned recognition at festivals and institutions across Australia. Thomas received the Johnny Dennis Award for Spring, performed by the Queensland Conservatorium at the Brisbane Festival, and has scored multiple award-winning projects including Feather, featured at the Winton Film Festival, and A Message to the Author, recognised at the Griffith Film Awards. His work has also reached audiences through SBS.
Currently Resident Composer for 44 Clovers Indie Film Studio, Thomas is completing his Master's in Screen Music at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School - where his credits include the documentary Over the Rainbow - while producing his debut feature album and co-producing an independent video game. He has been mentored by film conductor and orchestrator Tim Davies.
Thomas started out at the piano, developing a strong ear for improvisation and a natural feel for orchestral writing. His influences stretch from Romantic classical to Japanese jazz, and he's always looking for new instruments and techniques to push his sound somewhere unexpected.
